Target="" portion of hoplink... essential?

One of my affiliates wants to use a text link in email to promote my "Sites that Soar!" ebook. But, the link is pretty darned long. She wants to know if she can drop the 'target=' part of the link.

I told her that I think the affiliate part of the code (&aff=...) is the really important part to be sure that she gets credit for the sale.

Help? Advice?

I would hide the link string with html so you can use the link but no one will see it.

Easy to do with an html email, my thunderbird email system also lets me use text then insert a link for that text.
