Updates for Free Downloads users

I noticed that when I sent out an update for my product, it did not go to the people on the Free Downloads list.

What happened? I would like these people to get the product update too.

Updates are only sent to a Buyer Group, which is a list of buyers who received your product by going through a cart Checkout, whether a regular paid checkout or a Free Checkout, and who also did not opt-out of joining your list during their checkout.

If you used the Seller Admin > "Send Free download link" feature to manually send links, there is a box you can check there to add a link for the recipient to join that product's Buyer Group. If the recipient did not click that link, or if you did not choose to send the link, then the recipient would not have been added to the Buyer Group list and would not receive any Updates.

In order to ensure that our post-checkout thank-you emails can get through, so buyers can obtain the downloads they pay for, it has been crucial to minimize any chance that E-junkie could ever be associated with any spam activity. As such, we only support voluntary opt-in mailing list building, where we presume the buyer does not wish to subscribe to anything nor receive any further emails from the seller unless the buyer deliberately takes an extra step to subscribe (e.g., by checking a box during checkout, or by clicking a link in the free-download email).

1- It would be nice if the
"send free download link/code"
page was clearer about this.
Instead of invite reCEPient to mailing list, perhaps tack on update/mailing list.

It's unintuitive to me that free download links people don't get added to the update list. Or I didn't figure it out. In any case, it's unintuitive to me.

2- How do I tell who is on the update list and who is not?

I can only assign your request to Development for consideration as a feature enhancement in the future.

We are already working on upgrades to Buyer Group list management that would allow you to manually add, remove, import and export addresses, but those functions are offline until these new features are completed.

Thanks.

Could the documentation be updated? It's a little annoying to run into surprises / the unexpected. (e.g. tracking doesn't really work.)

Is there any way to figure out who is and isn't getting free updates?
What's the point of using e-Junkie to do this if I know that not everybody will get them? (e.g. I don't know if they have opted out even though they want to get free updates.)

2- I think I would highly prefer the default to be users are opted in... if I wanted to spam users (which I don't), I could easily be doing that anyways. The reason to opt users in is because they probably want to receive free updates... but may accidentally/unknowingly opt out.

Ok, here I go, reviving another old thread. Any word on this feature? If I am to use e-junkie's features for newsletters, I'd like the ability to edit my Buyer Lists manually or via import/export functionality.

We already have that feature ready. We'll be adding a link for it in the next update to Seller Admin, but meanwhile you can log into your Seller Admin and then visit this URL directly to view/edit/export your Buyer Group lists:

I can see how you edit and export, but I don't understand how to add or import to the Buyer Group lists.

I accept orders offline. Many schools still use purchase orders instead of credit cards. I have not used the the Update functionality to date because there has not been a way to combine the online and offline orders. This function would/will be a major addition.

Sorry, there is not a way to add names and e-mail address to your E-junkie mailing list.

As I'm sure this fact may frustrate legitimate users but unfortunately isn't that how it always works? We as legitimate users pay the cost because of spammers and such.

I know it frustrates me as a legitimate user but in the same sense I can completely understand. Just because I am a legitimate list owner, and everyone else here is as well ... doesn't mean every single E-junkie user is. And we can be guaranteed that if E-junkie did allow users to do that then they'd be full of spammers cause word would get out real quick.

I always look at it this way ... how would I feel if my email address was allowed to be added to a spammer's list?

Sorry, just throwing my 2 cents in here.

BTW, if you know someone deliberately wants to join a Buyer Group list, you can use your Seller Admin > "Send free download link" and enable the option to "Invite recipient to join mailing list for this product" before you send the link.

We are primarily an online selling platform, rather than an online marketing service, so our email-related functions are very simple extensions of the thank-you emails we send buyers to make sure they can get to their download page.

For more extensive and flexible email marketing needs, you really should turn to a mailing list specialist service such as Aweber, and you can even have your E-junkie buyers automatically submitted for subscription to your Aweber list(s) as explained here:
