I think I don't quite understand this yet ... or maybe I'm trying to do something impossible.

I'm selling radio plays that I want to offer both as a download or as a physical (shipped) CD. I want the "Add to cart" button to offer both, and the resulting sale either sends the buyer a download link (if they chose the download variant) or sends me an "order" to burn a CD and ship it (if they chose the CD option).

Can this be done? I tried it with one item, but I'm not sure I've done it right.

This can be done with our Variants setting for a single product if you want to provide the download for one price and download+CD for another price, giving buyers a menu option to select their preference before they click Add to Cart. If you want to offer a download-only and CD-only version of your product, then you would need to set those up as separate products with their own Add to Cart buttons.
