I assume I am not the first person to need this behavior: a customer puts 12 products in their shopping cart, buys them in one transaction, and I want them to receive one order confirmation email instead of 12 emails.

How are others implementing this? Through PayPal? By having e-junkie post the order data and writing their own script?

Most of the merchants are content with the email PayPal/Google will send the buyer :)

Some of them do use our integration features to achieve that by writing their own script. You will have to be careful with that as we will call your script for each product in the order so you will need a database where you can mark an order email as sent against a transaction id (which will be same for all the items in an order).
