I'm trying to create a new discount code, yet the box for "%" after the number to put in for percent discount is not able to be activated. I have other codes successfully entered, but the one I tried to create today didn't allow for that box to work so I am stuck in creating a new code for a promo.

Product discounts can only be flat discounts rather than percentage based.

Is the price of this product constant or does it change based on variants or buyer preference? If the product price is always the same all you need to do is enter the equivalent flat amount for your percentage. A 25% discount on a $10 product is 2.50, etc.

I think it is because it is the first one where this is a designated code for only one item. It didn't give me the option of % or flat amount. So for example, the item was $97, I wanted to give a 100% discount, so had to enter "97' in the amount box.

I figured I'd get the drop down option, but I guess not. Does this sound right?

You'll still have the percentage option for any "All Cart Items" discounts, it is only disabled for product specific discounts. Entering a 97.00 flat discount is the right way to create a 100% discount for a $97 item.

So, if I want to sell a product for $50 that is originally $135... my flat rate would be? I guess I"m wondering what "flat" means? The price they are paying or the price they are getting off?

Sorry... stopped my thought process. To sell a $135 item for $50, would I enter $85 in the flat rate box so that the net amount to be paid is $50?

Flat-amount discounts should specify the amount to be deducted, not the desired final price -- e.g., in your example, you would set the discount amount as 85.00.

Note that All Cart Items discounts can take a flat amount or percentage off the buyer's order total, but product-specific discounts only markddown the product's original per-unit price by a flat amount.
