How to know when its theft?

Hi,

I'm selling an ebook and set up the download page on my homepage via iframe.

After some problems at the product launch (people tried to download zip files with their ipads) I increased the maximum downloads to from 5 to 8 times.

No problems after that.

Now I have one customer for whom I had to reset the download link 2 times so far, that's 16 downloads...

So my question is: how do I distinguish technical problems and theft?

Thanks,
Eddie

First, bear in mind that Apple forbids direct downloads from the Web to their iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch); they only allow downloads to those devices from the Apple App Store. Buyers using those devices will need to perform their download with a regular computer, then they may be able to sync the file from there to their iOS device.

This help page covers some other factors that can cause slow/stalled downloads:
http://www.e-junkie.com/ej/trouble.downloads.slow-stalled.htm

In your E-junkie Transaction Log, if the IP address of the last download attempt shown in the Download Info column matches the Buyer IP shown in the Billing Info column, that's almost certainly the same person; however, a mismatch in IPs does NOT indicate theft, as the buyer simply may be retrying their download from a different location (e.g., placed their order from an iPad but used a regular computer elsewhere to download), or their ISP may assign them a new IP with every Internet connection session.

It's not really possible to determine conclusively when the actual buyer is attempting a download vs. anyone else, nor is it possible to prevent a buyer from copying or sharing their file after they've downloaded it only once, so our link expiration settings are only intended to ensure that if a buyer shares their link with others, it soon becomes useless to everyone.

If you're selling an eBook in PDF format, you may be interested in setting up our PDF Stamping feature to deter file sharing:

Hi,

Thank you for the answer, everything you've said makes sense.

However, that "PDF Stamping feature" is one of the reason I've signed up, but it does NOT work if you sell a package, like I do: a pdf and a zipfile with an mp3 in it...

Is there something I can do?

Thanks,
Eddie

You could just use E-junkie to stamp and deliver the PDF, and just make the mp3 file a bonus download link on your thank-you page for the PDF product, as suggested in Approach C here:
http://www.e-junkie.com/ej/help.package.htm#bonus

Otherwise, you might consider setting up the PDF and MP3 files as separate products, then create a multiAdd to Cart button that adds both of them to a buyer's cart at once, as explained here:
