PayPal problems: Incorrectly formatted shipping amount

I operate from the U.S., and some of my E-Junkie products (downloadable software that also requires shipping of items) are defined with a fixed handling fee (independent of country), but the shipping cost is set to $0.

When customers in European countries that use "," as decimal separator (instead of ".") place the order, they now get the following error message when trying to click the "Checkout with PayPal" buton from the E-Junkie shopping cart:

"The link you have used to enter the PayPal system contains an incorrectly formatted shipping amount"

I have had customers from the same countries buy products from me before, without any complaints, so I am not sure if this is a problem due to a recent change in the way E-Junkie transmits information to PayPal (wrong formatting of shipping cost etc.?) ...or if the problem is with Paypal?

The problem does not occur if none of the products have any handling or shipping cost added.

If anyone knows about this issue and how to work around it, please advice.

Hello,

Did you also email us about this issue? We've run into this a few times before and our development team is implementing work arounds as we can from this end -- the problem is due to some inconsistencies at PayPal and although we've reported the issue to them it's still in the air. We're patching the problems that spring up as we can in the meantime. :(

If you weren't the same person who emailed earlier today about this exact issue please send us a note at support@e-junkie.com with your website and we'll see what we can do.

If anyone else runs into it please report it to us via email with your site and the locations of buyers who get this error.

Just to make sure anyone who runs across this old thread has current information...

We actually had a partial workaround in place for this issue within about a day of it starting back in May. We were unable to completely work around it because the behavior was partly dependent on the buyer's PayPal language settings, something we couldn't access to base our system's behavior on. We were exploring ways to try to improve the workaround, but didn't come up with anything better.

Anyway, we were informed by PayPal earlier today that they have pushed a site update that fixes their bug. We backed out our workaround, and testing seems to confirm that this issue is resolved now.
