Our knitting-pattern shop is currently running a promotion in which each customer gets a free reindeer pattern with any purchase until Jan. 1. Currently, the way we're handling this is to go through each successful sale at the end of the day and manually compose an email with the reindeer pattern attached. As you can imagine, this gets pretty tedious. I was planning to write a script to streamline the process, but I'm wondering if there is some way to accomplish the task through E-Junkie. The only solution I could find was to add the reindeer pattern file to every product in the store, but obviously this would be a pain for anyone who purchased multiple files.

For your first question, the best way will be to host the free pattern on your website and then provide a link to it in either each product's "thank you" email or the common "thank you page" template in Admin > Preferences.
