If you just want people to download a file for free and don't need to issue each person a unique link that expires, then you can just upload the file to your Web site and make a link to it, just like you'd make a link from one page to another:

Click here to download my file

If you at least want to collect names/emails, but you still don't need to issue each person a unique link that expires, you could have a generic HTML contact form on your site that submits to any generic form-handler script, or even a subscription form for a mailing-list service like Aweber, which then leads to your free-download page after the form is submitted.

For example, the free ebook/free report may be about article marketing - just one small aspect of internet marketing.

By subscribing to receive my auto-responder course on article marketing, they will be subscribed to my main list about all internet marketing aspects as well.

To do it this way though, it's important to remember that two vital things are included here:

1. They're told on the sign up page that they will be subscribed to my other list.

2. They're informed in every one of my emails that they are able to un-subscribe at any time.

Rather than just give it away, I get them to sign-up to an auto-responder mailing list that:
1. Captures their email address
2. Immediately sends them an email with the book attached.
3. Every 3 days for the next 6 days sends follow "tips".

I'm using www.getresponse.com but you could use www.aweber.com

This is a little more complex but I think the follow up letters are useful. Also, from time to time I send out offers to my list. Over the last 3 years I've colleted about 30K emails.
