With the soaring popularity of tag related bookmark sites like de.icio.us and technorati it is no surprise that the same concept is being extended to more traditional web offerings such as one’s offered by Amazon.

By tagging items it becomes more convenient to remember and find an item when a user comes back for a later visit. Some of the useful ways in which tags can be used are to tag an item by a person’s name whom you intend to gift the item to or group a set of items.

By tagging items it will be easier for users to retrieve items they have tagged, on the flip side tagging by a person's first name or a commonly use word like “bag” or “iPod” or something similar can lead to chaos and confusion as many users would have used the same kind of tags to classify their items.

By default the tags are available to the public but the user has an option of changing this so that the tags are only visible to them alone by marking them private.
