Members of the eBay developer community will be able to create applications and extend eBay’s functionality using the core eBay API's for free. A source at eBay said that the Membership fee as well as certification fee has been waived.

The move comes amidst rumors of a Google backed service that will directly compete with eBay, the company is not taking any chances and has issued an open invitation to developers across the globe to build applications that can further extend and enhance the eBay experience.

“Twenty-two percent of all listings come from third party-developers,” said Greg Isaacs, director of eBay’s developers program. “They’re continuing to add a lot of value. We wanted to remove any obstacles that might hinder their ability to innovate”

Independent developers who write applications using the eBay API can charge their customers for the service and are under no liability to pay eBay any royalty for using the API.
