Xbox 360 to support iPod

Microsoft recently announced that their next generation console would support MP3 playback from virtually any music player but stressed the interoperability with the iPod.

Xbox digital-entertainment executive producer Jeff Henshaw told CNET News.com "Whenever an iPod is plugged into the console, Xbox 360 automatically detects it and allows one to browse by artist or album or genre or by custom playlist."

Because of the iPod's DRM software, the Xbox 360 will not be able to stream songs purchased from Apple's iTunes Music Store. Mr. Henshaw said the Xbox 360 would not be able to play protected songs purchased through the iTunes Music Store. Those songs, he said, will appear grayed out in menus on the Xbox.

Editor's notes: I think this just highlights the limitations of proprietary formats. Considering such shortcomings, I think small labels and bands selling their music just on iTunes should also consider sell their MP3s on their own sites to be able to reach a wider audience.
