Vertical Slide Valve Steam Engine Plans

For the modelmaker adept at the lathe and with a flair for mechanics, small scale steam engines are ever fascinating projects. The craftsman handy also at woodworking can make the necessary patterns from blueprints and have the castings poured at a local foundry. Many other workers will prefer to start off with a set of castings obtained in kit form, doing the more interesting maching and assembly work.

The little verical slide valve engine shown in the picture here was constructed from such a set of castings. All the castings were hard bronze which finishes up beautifully and takes a high polish when buffed. The engine has been carefully designed for amateur construction and is within the ability of the beginner who has a fair acquaintance with his lathe. When properly machined and connected to a suitable boiler, it is a sturdy little power plant.

Model engine kits include blueprints but these do not show the beginner how the parts are to be machined to the shapes and dimensions specified. The accompanying photos illustrate actual steps in finishing a set of castings and many of the operations shown are common to the machining of all small engines.

Six pages in total. Contains text descriptions, detailed diagrams, photos, measurements, etc. Age is vintage but this does not seem to matter as the plans have not changed since first produced.
