The purpose of this book is to prompt conscious thought and open discussion about the underlying cause of post-traumatic-stress-disorder and related psychological disorders. It is not intended to convey expert advice or medical guidance.
Over 300,000 soldiers involved in our current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have symptoms of post-traumatic-stress. Over 480,000 Vietnam veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic-stress-disorder. In any give year, over 7,000,000 Americans suffer from PTSD. If PTS or PTSD is a part of your life the first thing you should do is find a good therapist to help you through the process.
No matter what the underlying source of your trauma may be, trauma does lead to post-traumatic-stress and can lead to PTSD. No matter what the underlying source of your trauma may be, ALL PTSD is caused by a natural internal process. You can treat the cause and you can recover from the nightmare. All PTSD victims need to know that.
The prevailing view within the medical community is that PTSD comes from a low threshold for fear combined with feelings of intense fear, helplessness, and hopelessness in a life or death situation. It is a point of view that emphasizes cowardice and dishonors the courage of the PTSD victim. Furthermore, it does not explain why so many people who never experienced those intense emotions still go on to develop PTSD. The overall success rate for treating and curing PTSD is dismal and most patients simply get worse over time. I know that fear, helplessness, hopelessness, and horror can lead to PTSD. However, they are not the primary causes of the PTSD. They are only manifestations of the underlying process which can lead to PTSD.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five American adults suffers from a diagnosable psychological disorder. Some o those disorders are caused by physical defect, physical trauma, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse, but most of those psychological disorders are born in the exact same process which can lead to PTSD.
I fought my way through several years of childhood PTSD following my parents separation in 1953. The net result of that battle was a deeply flawed psyche filled with character flaws and personality problems which left me vulnerable to future psychological damage. I joined the military in 1965 and served in Vietnam as an Army aero-scout pilot in the 17th Air Cavalry. In 1967 and 1968 I saw and was involved in some of the heaviest fighting of that war. The experience left me deeply scared and once again fighting my own private battle with PTSD. The men I served with were without a doubt the most courageous men I have ever met, yet many of them are fighting their own private battles with this devastating disorder. Telling them it is all about fear simply isn’t working and it only makes the problem worse.
Finding Center offers an alternate point of view. It explains the underlying process which leads to PTSD and the filters involved in that process. It explains how to prevent PTSD from developing and provides a six step process which can lead to recovery from PTSD if it has already developed. It also explains why the same natural process can lead to other disorders.
If you are one of those millions of Americans currently suffering from a psychological disorder I urge you to read this book. If anything I have written here applies to you life or makes sense to you, I urge you to discuss it openly and honestly with your therapist.
If you have a family member, friend, or loved one who is suffering from PTS or PTSD I urge you to read this book. If anything I have written here makes sense to you, I urge you to discuss it with that person, urge them to read this book, and urge them to seek professional help.
