How careful do I need to be with promo codes?

Hi,

If I use a code like DGDD27 for one discount, but also use DGDD277 or DGDD2778 for another discount, will the system handle it easily?

I know it is confusing, but we sell a cruising guide for sailors. If they use a code we have assigned to their yacht club, let's say SYC884, they receive a discount and we donate a share to the yacht club.

However, we upgrade our guide annually and some sailors upgrade every year. We give a discount to sailors who have previously bought a guide.

So we want to offer them a code like SYC88TG, so they could get their special discount and the yacht club would get its cut and we would have an easier time keeping track of who gets what since the codes are similar.

It depends what those discount codes apply to: the Cart Item Total, or the Item Unit Price, and in the latter case for which specific product(s).

At any one time, a buyer's cart can have at most one discount applied to each of the following, in any combination:

• The Cart Item Total;
• The Shipping & Handling amount;
• The Item Unit Price of each product in their cart.

E.g., suppose a buyer has two different items in their cart. They could have a discount applied to the overall Cart Item Total, another applied to Shipping & Handling, and two more each applied to the Item Unit Price of different products in their cart.

My fault entirely, but I think you misunderstood my question. It even confused me.

If you are a member of a yacht club, you can use the code we have assigned to that yacht club to both get a discount on our product and we would also share part of the sale price with the club. Let's say the code is SYC667.

If you have purchased our product before, you qualify for a special price. We would give you another code we have assigned to your club so you get the special price, plus the additional discount and we would share part of the sale price with the club. Let's say the code is SYC6677.

This could eventually involve dozens of club, so we wanted the codes to be similar so we would know, looking at the code, the yacht club the code was for, so we could easily give them the share they were due.

Our concern was if the codes were too similar the shopping cart might confuse them.

Could I use two codes, SYC667 and SYC6677, or others that might be similar except for one additional digit or one different digit?

It depends whether or not the two codes apply to the same thing -- e.g., both applied to the Cart Item Total, or both applied to the Item Unit Price of the same product.

If both codes apply to the same thing, then only one of them can be claimed in a buyer's cart. However, if they apply to different things, then both of them can be claimed in a buyer's cart at the same time.

One other question, mostly because I'm just curious.

If I use those two codes, SYC667 and SYC6677, not together but individually and for separate sales, would they work or would one interfere with the other?

Having both of those discount codes merely set up should not interfere with each other.

However, if they both apply to the same thing -- e.g., the Cart Item Total, or the Item Unit Price of the same product -- any individual buyer would only be able to apply one of them at a time.
