Looks like we've already been discussing this with you in live chat, but in case anyone else is wondering:
Our system was running at unusually high capacity earlier today, causing the slowdown. This suggests we may have been facing an attempted Denial of Service (DoS) attack -- bogus traffic trying to flood out legitimate traffic -- so our sysadmin is working on mitigation and identifying the attacking IP(s) to block.
